You all know I love craft beer. I love craft beer almost as much as I love running and I’ve loved it for longer. Seriously, I was enjoying a craft beer or two long before I discovered the joy of a good run. And guess what I recently got from a race? That’s right I was 3rd in my age group (yes there were more than 3 of us. No, there weren’t many more.) Anyways, the Wausau Marathon mailed me this gorgeous age group award. Talk about a classy organization!
But I digress. Today’s topic for Tuesdays on the Run is “what do are your post race rituals and rewards?) I know you think I’m going to say I reward myself with beer, but despite my love of it, beer is not often my post run reward of choice. I’ll have one if I’m running with a group and we end at a place with good beer options.
Or occasionally, I’ll have one if a race has something I like afterwards, but I’m kind of particular about what I’ll drink.
But much more often than a beer, I grab a glass of chocolate milk. And I love it when a race hands out cold chocolate milk at the finish line.
I know that some people say that it’s the perfect post run combination of carbs and protein. Others say humans should never drink milk. I’ll be honest – I drink it because I like it. I find it refreshing and it gives me some calories after a race when I’m not ready to eat. This is important because I often race/run without fuel and need something pretty quickly after the finish.
That’s pretty much it. Back in the days before I adapted to running half marathons so frequently, I was the queen of the epsom salt bath. But to be honest, I can’t even remember the last time I took one. Maybe I’ll take one after I run Marine Corps Marathon completely undertrained… But I’ll probably have a beer instead.

It’s so weird to see a picture of you with a beer in your hand, Erika! I kid. And I LOVE you for it. And CONGRATS on your age group award! Woohoo!!!!!!
I enjoy both–chocolate milk and beer–after a long hard run or race. Not together, of course!
That is a great age group award! I got a belt buckle for an age group award at my marathon over the weekend and thought that was pretty fun as well. I don’t have a whole lot of post run ritual other than hydrating and eating whatever sounds good.
A great beer would be a perfect post-run celebration after the Marine Corps marathon. 🙂 Good luck!
After thinking bout this I realize that I don’t really reward myself with anything (unless it’s a Disney race cus those rewards are so tempting)!
I’m all about chocolate milk after a race or a hard run. But I don’t drink it often enough. If we ever have chocolate milk in the house, it just disappears instantly because everyone love its!
I tried the Epsom salt bath once, but I didn’t feel any difference. I don’t like ice baths either… maybe it’s baths.
I do not like Chocolate milk but I know that it is a popular chic after races. I can’t see how that can stay cold enough in those coolers they have when it is so hot out though.
Congrats on the AG award! I’ve had a nice glass of chocolate soy milk after a long run, it is surprisingly refreshing.
I love me some chocolate milk and I agree, it’s fantastic when races hand it out at the end! Delicious. 🙂
That is a gorgeous award! And who cares how many people were in your AG. #countit and fill that sucker UP
I do not like beer nor chocolate milk ! Give me a glass of wine though… but like you I am picky about what I like.
