Mar, Courtney, and Cynthia are hosting their usual Friday 5 and this week they want to know what I’ll do this summer…
I admit it. I am not a fan of summer. Even with our super cold, nasty, long winter this year, I am not in love with summer. I love the idea of summer: longer days, more relaxed schedules, sun instead of grey. But humidity? Heat? No, no, no. In fact, I think I suffer from summer SAD. Every summer, though, I make the effort to embrace it. I will try again this summer, but if you find me huddled in a corner of my basement with ice in my running bra, well, you know why.
1. Run 2 half marathons! I’m running a half marathon in Ireland this summer, where the high appears to be in the 60s, so YAY! The other one, though, is the Madison Mini in Madison, Wisconsin. It could be comfortable, or it could be screaming hot. Either way -I’M RUNNING TWO HALF MARATHONS – which means, I actually have to train in the Virginia heat this summer. D’oh! The only thing that has me excited about this is running the race with my dad and this girl!
2. Spend an entire day drinking. Yes, I’m already planning that. We are once again going to The Great Taste of the Midwest, which is the marathon of beer drinking. So.much.fun.
3. Train for Ragnar DC. See above – yes, I will be running in the heat this summer. Poor planning on my part – usually I hit Revolve and their serious air conditioning instead of braving runs in 100 degree heat.
4. Take my kids swimming. I think the only thing I hate more than heat and humidity is swimming. I hate getting my face wet and I don’t really like being out in the bright, glaring sun. So, yeah, I have to force myself to take my kids to the pool. (Probably doesn’t help that we don’t have a local pool here…)
5. Take advantage of all the DC area has to offer. My boys and I hang out a lot during the summer, in between camps and vacations. Last year we went to the Baltimore Aquarium, the National Museum of Natural History, and the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum. DC has so many museums and other cool things and Shoo is old enough to enjoy them now (and Jones still likes me, which I know will end soon…), so we need to get out there and have fun!
So, tell me, what are you doing this summer? Got any DC suggestions? And are you visiting DC and want to meet up?
Not visiting, but we have to meet up! I’ve only been to Madison once, but I am trying to figure out how to get back. I’ve heard great things about the mini!
ooh Ireland that sounds incredible-never been. Excited to do Ragnar with you this fall.
Wow! Two half marathons this summer. You are pretty ambitious. Good for you! It is getting harder and harder to get my butt out of bed for a run in the a.m. before it gets too hot for the day. Good thing I don’t have any races coming up. Good luck in your training. ~L
Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking – I hate hot half marathons. Oh well, at least it’s with a friend.
Running a half marathon in Ireland sounds like it’ll be an incredible experience!
I love that spend an entire day driking is on the list 🙂 The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is a fun thing at the end of June beginning of July and kids seem to enjoy it. That might be a good one to look into for number 5.
I love the spend the entire day drinking plan! Reminds me of college days…lol 🙂
Have fun at Ragnar, I’ve done 3!
Everything on your list sounds legit to me! The kids and I were just talking about how we need to get into swimming this summer. I’m a horrible swimmer, I’m going to try and make this the summer that I get good (or at least decent) at it.
I would LOVE to run a Ragnar!
You’ve got a fun summer ahead! Enjoy!
My friends keep asking, why Wisconsin in August when it’s so hot? Duh, because you are there on vacation with your family. I need to book my airline tickets soon. This may be my most expensive flight yet! Who knew PDX-Madison was not cheap??
So looking forward to seeing you!
Running a half in Ireland sounds amazing!!!
Looks like you’ve got a great summer of races to train for, sounds like a lot of fun!
The Baltimore National Aquarium is nice. My kids love it every year.
Totally jealous of that beerfest! I bet that will be so much fun. I just wrote about my fitness event bucket list and a Ragnar race is on my list. One day hopefully I’ll run one!
Love your plans for the summer, I’m jealous that you’ll be running in Ireland, wow! Ragnar is definitely on my running bucket list…maybe one day!
I’m pretty sure I could get behind the day of drinking!!!
And, I’m not a fan of putting my faced in the water but I love being at the pool or beach – I lay out and read while the boys swim – everyone is happy!!!
Oh I would love to meet up in D.C.! I’ll definitely be down there at some point. I’ll take your kids swimming if you run a half marathon for me 😉
i love that you just finished running a ridiculous amount of races and already have 2 more on the calendar plus ragnar. i love swimming but kinda love that you hate the pool 🙂
I’m so jealous you’re running Ragnar! Even in the heat 🙂 I have races and more races this summer!
I just did Ragnar Cape Cod and had a blast! I’m going to try stand-up paddle boarding this summer.
That’s amazing that you are doing a half in Ireland! I’m so intrigued by the Ragnar relays. Can’t wait to read your recap!
A half in Ireland! How amazing. Museums are a good idea (especially the AC) – I would like to visit the Udvar Hazy Air and Space and Native American Museums.
I really want to do a Ragnar sometime! And yeah the great museums and things – awesome!
Great list. A couple of big running things on there, so you’ll have no choice but to be active out in the hot. Following it up with #4 will help though.
Normally I would say that I’d meet you at the Madison Mini, but my injury sucks and instead you’ll just have to think about me as you are running through the Arboretum.
I haven’t taken my kids swimming yet, but I’m learning to swim myself.
I’m around Madison for about two weeks if you want to try to meet up… email me at mcmmamaruns at gmail.com
There is always a trip to Luray Caverns or out that way there is a tubing place..bring a cooler of beverages and lay in some water…I think the place is the River Outfitters..4 miles of water takes all day to get to the end..
I would love to do a Ragnar. I am currently doing a summer 5K series.
