As I mentioned, we had the opportunity this year to go downtown to watch the fireworks from a rooftop. As it turns out, it was one of the best rooftops in the area to watch from. As you can see in the picture, we weren’t far from the Washington Monument. Slightly to my right, behind me in the picture, is where the fireworks went off.
We felt like we could practically touch them (in fact, Shoo asked if he could grab one LOL). The view was at least as good as from the Mall, but we had bathrooms with running water and a very small group of people. We won’t get the chance again for another couple of years (if ever), so we really made the most of it.
After the fireworks, we walked back into Arlington to where our car was parked (about 2.5 miles). We had a stroller for Shoo, but Jones walked most of it. We did let him ride in the stroller across the bridge, while I carried Shoo. Cross training?
Today, I put on my big girl panties and took the boys to the National Zoo. I don’t drive in DC, except to the zoo, and even that gives me major anxiety. I also get a little anxious taking the two out by myself, but Shoo is no longer the runner he used to be and Jones has grown up a lot this year, so I decided I could handle them. I’m proud to say I got there without getting lost and we spent 4.5 hours walking around. Then I managed to get us safely home. Go me LOL. Maybe someday soon I’ll be brave enough to take them on the metro downtown.
No running today. I ran a fast four miles yesterday (needed to squeeze it in before I took the cat to the vet) and then walked all over the very hilly zoo today. Now I’m tired and the boys are having “quiet time” (which probably means that one of them has fallen asleep LOL).
What a great place to watch the fireworks! I think I watched those fireworks on tv. So not the same. 🙂
perfect spot to watch the fireworks!!
I love zoos. I'm enjoying them more now that my kids are grown and I can pay attention to the animals and not my kids!
We're lucky. In our town, we can walk out our front door, plunk ourselves down in our lawn chairs and watch the fireworks display that originates from the school yard literally one block away. The cardboard from the fireworks was all over our street the next day.We watched with our neighbors, one of whom had a 4 month-old baby who was SO cute and she was just fascinated by the fireworks. The loudness didn't bother her a bit.Pretty amazing. O … but yours was good, too.
Sounds like a great fireworks location.I don't blame you for not wanting to drive in DC, the roads are laid out strangely and parking is a bitch.
Props to you for walking all over the zoo – an keeping track of two boys at the same time. We did the zoo on July 4th 3 years ago and it was the hottest, most tiring thing ever.
That looks like the perfect spot for fireworks! And I really don't blame you for not driving in D.C. I wouldn't be able to do it either!
Sounds like a great 4th of July. You really did have good seats for the show. I can't imagine taking the kids into the city….I hate taking mine to Target.
sounds like the perfect way to enjoy a holiday!
This was my first year watching the fireworks on the Mall, and I am still in awe. There's just nothing like watching the sky light up around the Monument … and even better to have a rooftop view!
Awesome view of the fireworks!! I've braved the masses a few times, but have stayed away the past few years. And, loved the "put on my big girl panties" line:>
Nice spot for the fireworks! We usually take ours to the local field, but I worked this year so hub took them to my in-laws where they could watch the beach fireworks. I was jealous! Our local zoo is teeny tiny & very manageable for me, thank goodness.
Fireworks from a rooftop – so cool! Looks like quite a view.
