I suck at cross training. I love to run, but I’m not a big fan of much else. I don’t own a bike (although we may change that in the spring), I don’t belong to a gym, and I don’t currently have a good spot in my house to do a video. So, I’ve been running five days a week. And I’ve been getting burned out. It seems that four days a week is a much better fit for me.
Shoo and I started taking our exercise class again today. I LOVE this class (and I’ve never enjoyed classes much). I discovered that my fitness level is better even than it was in the fall while I was training for a marathon. Apparently the hill running and speed workouts are making a difference. I was able to do the most difficult version of every move today and, while I felt like I got a workout, I never felt like I couldn’t complete a set or whatever. This class meets for 8 of the next 9 weeks, but then I’m going to have to find something new.
We are going to be buying a flat screen tv soon, so the current living room tv will move to the basement family room. This will allow me to workout in the basement, as our current basement tv is so old I can’t hook up a DVD player. Really. And the treadmill is in front of the tv in the basement bedroom.
So, that was a long way of asking, “What are your favorite workout videos?” I know Jillian is a favorite, but I’d be interested in some older stuff that I could potentially get from the library to try before I buy…
11 miles planned tomorrow, hopefully before the snow starts, or I’ll be doing 11 very boring miles on the treadmill.
Good luck on the 11 before the snow! I found that I need to cross-train, otherwise i just seem to get injured. I’ve been doing the 30 day shred, like it so far, but not sure on too much older stuff.
I’ve tried the FIRM DVDs but didn’t really stick with it (but my daughter used them over the weekend) and I’m rather liking my new Yoga DVDs (just posted about that).
I saw your comment on “Run Like a Girl” blog… that’s how I found your blog. Anyway, I used to lift weights and loved it. Now, I’m training for a marathon (my first) and feel like I have no time to do other stuff, even though I’m sure I should mix it up a bit. I don’t usually do well with exercise DVDs but I have heard that Jillian Michaels is good and challenging. I hope you find one that works for you!
I have done the Firm videos and I like them. I also like Cathe Friedrich’s for a good strength workout.
you and I need to become one person as I SUCKETH at the crosstraining and need to run.
I’m like you: I lik e to run, but don’t like to do much else, and yes, sometimes it can become monotonous.I don’t have any workout dvds, except yoga, so sorry, no suggestions from me.
I’m not help 🙁 I don’t do DVD’s. I don’t know I just can never get into them.
I’m terrible about cross training too. I used to LOVE Tae Bo and the Billy Blanks boot camp DVD, and those are old enough you could probably get them from the library. I recently got the Firm Power Yoga, and really like that.
I like Pilates videos, but don’t have a favorite. I hope you got your 11 miles in outside before snow!About Key West— I just loved the laid back atmosphere. It’s like the land of Jimmy Buffet songs….We went in Sept. of 07 for our 10-yr anniv. We stayed at the Dewey House and LOVED IT. It’s part of the Southernmost Hotels complex. You have probably already booked a hotel though. Anyway, at the Southernmost complex, they have a small private beach (tops optional–whatever!) and the neatest little tiki bar. Best. Pina. Colada. ever. It’s open to everyone. The sunset celebration at Mallory Square is pretty cool–they have it every night. We took a sunset snorkeling cruise– I had a panic attack because of all the jelly fish, but the cruise was nice. We loved touring Hemingway’s house (very neat! cats everywhere), Truman’s Little White House, and Fort Zachary State Park. Ft. Zachary had the prettiest beaches and Shoo might like the fort. Across from Hemingway’s house was the best little restaurant. The most fun we had was renting a scooter and zipping around the island on it. We just did it for one day (sans helmets–scary), but we went EVERYWHERE that day. We wandered through cemetaries, looked at beaches, explored the wharf…. I can’t wait to go back. I’d avoid Mangoes. Not the best food or atmosphere. Great little French Pastry place on Duval. Our B and B brought in pastries from there for breakfast every day. Dry Tortugas is supposed to be cool, but we didn’t go. The least fun part for me was the flight from Atlanta to Key West on a smaller-than-I’m-used-to plane. I think it had 40 seats and we flew in a storm. I was not prepared for the humidity of Key West in Sept. And I live in Tennessee!
Uh-oh– you'd have to get up pretty early this morning to beat the snow. Good luck with that! It's pretty cool that you and Shoo can do the exercise class together. I always thought all the parent & me yoga classes looked fun, only I didn't have kid to bring.
Running a few miles in the snow might be pretty. I dunno about 11, though. I hope you get the run in beforehand.I’ve tried my hub’s P90X DVDs as cross-training. They’re definitely challenging.
