Seriously. Just don’t do it.
I’ve been stuck in Boston because of a snow storm coming back from Iceland. I got to sleep in an airport in Nebraska thanks to a snow storm. I got to take an extra ferry between islands to catch an airplane on another island during a windstorm while in the Azores (and we won’t even discuss the fact that I had morning sickness AND I get seasick. Yeah, that was fun for all).
But I think this trip might just take the cake.
Things that went wrong:
- It “snowed” in DC on Sunday morning. Just enough that our flight needed de-icing and we took off almost an hour late.
- We arrived in Philly and RAN from one end of the A terminal to the other (between a quarter and a half mile) only to miss our flight. Remember, I ran a half marathon the day before.
- Our flight the next day was delayed because the glue had to cure on a new window. Really.
- The new window didn’t work right, so we lost another hour and a half.
- We FINALLY got to St. Maarten and the airport lost power. No, really, it did.
- We got a rental car and there was an accident, so we couldn’t get out of Simpson Bay.
- 20 or so cars got out of Simpson Bay after the accident. We? Were 4 cars back when they raised the bridge for almost a half hour to let all the yachts through.
BUT! This is the view I had when I woke up this morning:
And there were some good things:
- Nodding Head Brewery in Philadelphia
- Clean underwear from Macy’s
- Our bag was the last bag to come out right before the power went out
- An amazing “France meets Jamaica” meal for dinner
- No kids. ;o)
- The Run EMZ t-shirt that will be running down the beach tomorrow
- The fact that I will be barefoot or in minimalist shoes all week
- USAirways staff who changed our flight so we’ll be here an extra day
- My parents who were awesome enough to take one for the team and let us stay an extra day
I’m in St. Maarten now, so you can be jealous. At least until it comes time for me to actually head home.
jealous… so so jealous… even with the flight-astrophes. But you travel the way I travel… so note to us: you and I should NEVER travel together. Let's just keep that in mind… have a stellar STELLAR trip.
I've had a few trips from hell myself. Sounds like everything worked out in the end. Enjoy!
Just glad you made it there and still have the same amount of time down there! 🙂
sounds terrible. but I love that they gave you an extra day! enjoy the trip and bring some of that sun back with you to DC please!
What a mess, but that picture is fantastic. We're headed to Fiji on Sunday, hoping all travel problems are exclusive to traveling from the east coast!
Few things are more frustrating than being at the mercy of airlines. UGH!!! I am so sorry that your vacation got delayed, but happy you finally arrived there safely.
Stressful! I'm glad you finally arrived, though, and that you were able to stay an extra day. I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing stay.
Wow! That is a long list of really annoying things! but then that view….I think that might be worth it!! it's beautiful! It's great that you get to stay the extra day, you deserve it after all that.
the view looks fabulous! enjoy.
i am jealous. have a wonderful vacay!
I'm sorry it took so long to get there, but I hope you have a wonderful time! 🙂
Very, very jealous…even with all the mishaps getting there – that view is worth it! Enjoy yourself!

wow, that definitely sounds intense, but I'm so happy you made it and can relax and enjoy your vacation! Have a great time and forget all about your travel woes!
Somehow, I'm thinking it was allll worth it.
It will sooooooooo be worth it all. I was in St. Maarten (on the Dutch side of the island) in 2005, and I friggin' loved it. One of my favorite vacations to date.
Ah, that first sunrise or sunset somehow makes it all worth it. But just to be on the safe side, I'm gonna email you my vacation dates to make sure you're no where near me … no offense!
Great view and I like your good list much better.
That is some rotten luck!
Now that you are there . . . RELAX!
wow. wow. wow. wow.enjoy it girlie! you deserve it!
That view is amazing!!!!Well, even though it's a little too late now, if you ever get stuck at the airport in Omaha (assuming that's the NE one you're talking about) give me a call…we live about 5 minutes or so from it. 🙂
We just got back from a week in St. Thomas that was lovely. Enjoy your vacation! 40s and rainy here in NoVa today so enjoy the sun.
That is horrible – thank god you were heading somewhere heavenly. Having to endure something like that on your way home would be hell. I'm sure you wont have to, given your travel history (wink). Relax and enjoy!
