Adam over at The Boring Runner hosted a virtual 5k this weekend. Since I’m not signed up to run any real races in January, I thought I’d make it my “comeback race. Unfortunately, I think the title kind of says it all. I planned to see how fast I could run a 5k, but I discovered quickly I didn’t have a race in me.
Short Story: 5k in 30:30 (which is actually the fastest I’ve run since I was injured.)
Long Story: It was cold and windy (at least the weather got into the spirit of the race) and I thought about jumping on the treadmill. Instead, I bundled up in my new favorite piece of running gear and headed out the door.
I also work a hat, but I look goofy in it, so I’m not sharing that look. ;o)
I headed out my front door and nearly had my storm door ripped out of my hands by the wind. Not a good sign. I started slow, but picked it up and got up to a nice 9 minute pace. Then I turned the corner and was basically stopped in my tracks as I tried to head up a hill into the wind. Mile 1: 10:03
I figured I could pick up the pace and still do a sub 30 minute 5k, but the wind kept coming and my foot went numb, either from the new shoes or the wind. Mile 2: 10:03 (at least I was consistent.)
I tried to really push it on the third mile, but I was struggling. My injured achilles felt fine, but my new shoes were causing issues with my OTHER achilles. Ugh. Mile 3: 9:27 (but it felt like I was working a whole lot harder). Finally finished in 30:30 and then ran another mile “cool down” in the freezing cold.
Not a pretty race, but at least it was a pain-free run! Gotta be happy about the small stuff.
Thanks for hosting, Adam!
Great job on pushing through, even if it was pretty bad out there. I hate running in the wind.
Running in the wind is the absolute WORST!!!Glad to hear the Achilles is starting to behave.
A run without pain is a victory! Love the new jacket and I'll bet it was perfect for yesterday's wind (and is this the coldest winter ever around here?)
Great-looking jacket! Way to go on the 5K. Sounds like MISERABLE running conditions, so good job getting it done!
You must embrace your goofiness. I demand a hat picture!
yay for pain free runs. 🙂 Great job.
Wind – ouch! I'm glad you got through pain-free! That is awesome, and such wonderful news!
Nice jacket!!You are braver than I for going out in the crap weather.Yay for pain free runs!
Pain-free is better than fast, any day! Ncie job!
Love Love Love that jacket! Now you have your 5K time for the year to beat!
The most important part was that it was pain-free!
It has been so windy here in NH, I can really relate, but I do love your new jacket. take care of those achilles, don't go crazy!
I love the jacket! Much more stylish than the reflective vest I've been rockin' lately!
small victories! glad to see that we're both ambassadors again – see you at the end of the month!
NICE WORK!! I hate the wind. Hate hate hate. But, you got out there and got it done – and that is what is important!(Btw, you should have totally posted the picture of you in the hat!)
