Beer Geek loves this Jeep Cherokee more than he loves me a lot. It was our first major purchase together back in 1995 (OK, he purchased it, I just made him buy one with four doors. Yes, I was already thinking about kids. ) It has been an amazing car. In 17 years, it’s needed regular maintenance (oil changes + tires), two water pumps, and some brake work. That’s it. I really couldn’t ask for a more reliable car. Unfortunately, however, it has very little in the way of safety features, so I replaced it with a Honda Pilot.
Beer Geek was not ready to let go of his baby, so he’s been using it as his commuting car for the last year and a half. And then the door hinge broke. He’s been climbing in and out of the passenger door for weeks, while waiting for me to figure out where to get it fixed.
Today was that day. And I suppose you are wondering what this has to do with fitness. Well, the repair shop was 3.5 miles from our house. And it was 90 degrees this morning.
And I ran home. Thanks to all the running and cross training I do, 3 miles was nothing. Thanks to all the blog reading I do, I knew how to handle the heat. I ran slow (even walked a few hills), chose shade when I could, and ran with a handheld full of nuun. I was pretty sweaty and gross when I got home, but I got ‘er done.
Functional fitness – staying fit so your body is not the limiter when it comes to living your life.
Love the definition of functional fitness.
Chad (my husband) often drops off the car for maintenance or repair and runs home. Even when I offer drive him home he prefers to run.
I ironically, Chad had a Jeep Cherokee that he refused to get rid of. It took me forever to convince him that he needed a new car. I think we had it for 15 years with no problems except for maybe the last year or so.
Love this concept and just being real about stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Lovin’ this definition and concept!
Oh the hidden benefits of being fit!
ohh i so love running errands it makes me feel like a rockstar!!
my poor little car is only a 2003, but had a major accident 2 years ago. so it sits at my parents in KC for when I travel back to work and thus only drive it every other month…but soon it will be time to say good bye and since it was my own very first brand new car purchase I’ll be sad
Running from the repair shop is a great way to get in a run during those time crunched days, instead of just sitting in the waiting room drinking their coffee and eating the pastries they leave out to tempt you with. Functional fitness is also the stuff you do around the house like gardening, cutting firewood, etc.
Ive never run home from te shop, but I frequently bring my bike and cycle home
We have a similar situation at our house with hubby’s RAV4. He refuses to give that car up even though 5 people cannot ride in it. I love the idea of running home from the repair shop, I just pray that I don’ t have to do it for a long time!!!
Running errands – my favourite!
Hubs dropped his car off this morning and then ran home. Not many can say they do that!
Staying fit for the inevitable zombie apocalypse, which according to news reports from Florida and New Jersey has already begun. Cheers!
love it…I used to take my bike in my car when it’d be at shop and bike home, errands, and bike back to get my car 🙂
When I started having to climb out the passenger door is about the time I got rid of my old Toyota. Well done on getting home in one piece. 90 degrees is horrendous.
Love that definition!
Oh my heavens. I thought I was the only one who did that. The oil change/repair place is 2 miles from my house and the dudes look at me like I am crazy when I run home after I drop off the car then run back to get it.
Awesome. Knowledge is (fitness) power! I love making errands into running adventures. It’s simply the best way to get in a workout and be productive!
Very nice! I love that you credit blog reading for being prepared on running in the heat.
And I thought functional fitness was that old people exercise class where they sit in metal chairs in the church basement . . . 🙂
I do this too – except mine is more often the 8 mile run of shame from my house to the golf course the morning after a night of over-indulging.
Love the idea of functional fitness. Makes so much sense! My first car was a Jeep Cherokee and it was also the first car that my husband and I had together (while we were dating). This brought back fond memories for me!
