Slave to the scale?

December 6, 2011 by MCM Mama 22 Comments

Confession:  I step on my scale nearly every morning.

I have a routine – I get up, go to the bathroom, put in my contacts (helps to be able to actually see the scale LOL), and then hop on the scale.  I even know how much to subtract for specific pajamas versus being naked.

Surprisingly though, I actually have a pretty healthy attitude about my weight and a good relationship with the scale.  Seeing a number that isn’t what I want doesn’t ruin my day.  Seeing a lower number doesn’t make me giddy.

To me, the scale is just another tool in my journey to stay healthy and fit.  It’s a reminder to choose to move more or reach for the apple instead of the cookie.  It’s a caution sign when the little indulgences start to add up.  Generally speaking, I eat what I want (thankfully I usually want healthy foods) and I exercise when I want (umm, I have a little bit of a run addiction) and it all balances.  But sometimes, things slide a little too much in the wrong direction and the scale provides a gentle wake up call before I go to far.  Somehow it makes me aware of my choices in ways that tight jeans don’t.

So, my scale and I will stay BFFs, even when I’m not thrilled with the number.  Because I know that it’s only one indicator (and not the most important one) of how fit I am these days.

How do you feel about your scale?  Are you a member of the “weigh each day” club or are you able to judge based on how your clothes fit?

I also weigh myself every day….Since starting running, I have a much better attitude about my weight. I have gained weight but I know it's muscle because my body looks better. I have had a very unhealthy relationship with the scale in the past though.

My scale is in a bathroom cabinet, under the t.p., etc, so I don't weigh myself regularly at all. But every once in awhile, I dig it out for curiosity's sake.

I am a random weigh-er: about every week or week and a half. The daily thing just has too much difference depending on circumstances.

I totally could have written this post word for word! The scale doesn't make or break my day, but I weigh every day. So funny the way you put it about the little indulgences adding up – that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now.

I don't weigh myself every single day, but I do a few times a week (usually right after a run). If I don't weigh myself regularly, things start to creep up. I am pretty tall, and lucky enough that I gain weight all over, so it is easy for me to put on 7-10 pounds before I feel it in my clothes. But once those 7-10 pounds are on, they are hard to get off. I do have a range where I am most comfortable with my body, how it looks, how it works, and what I can eat, and I use the scale as a tool to help keep me there.

I don't weigh myself very often. Maybe once a month or less. Sounds like you have a great attitude about the scale.

I weight myself at least 2 to 3 times a week. Their are times I will weight everyday. I do let the scale define me. I know I shouldnt but it can put me in a good mood if I like the numbers and if I dont it can put me in a rotten mood. I literally have a pair of jeans, I call them I tight fitten jeans that I try on one or two times a day. I tend to obsess about my weight. I have been doing better lately because I found a running partner that will run outside in the winter so that has help me alot to keep my weight under control.

I do weigh myself at least 3 times per week. It's just a nice "check". I'm pretty flexible with my weight though. I give myself a window of happiness! 🙂 Having battled my weight for so long, it is just something I like to do.

I go through phases of once a day, once a week, not at all… mostly I just use it as a guideline like you do. It helps keep me in line. Problem is, I have a bad habit if ignoring it completely if I am 'off track' nutrition-wise. Slippery slope.

I do weight myself every day too and have a very similar attitude about it. I know what my normal fluctuations are, and I know right where I "should" be if I am eating well, etc. For awhile I was very scared that the weight would "sneak" back on (I lost over 75lbs) but now I have a much healthier mindset about it. If I am up a little I know it will be back down in a day or two. So yup, I am just like you. 🙂

I used to weight myself everyday, multiple times a day and became obsessed with it. I find it's best to stay away from it and only hop on every so often.

I think there are few people out there who can have a healthy relationship with the scale, but it seems like it is working for you. I step on about once a week–sometimes more, sometimes less. I generally don't like to, but I do it mainly for curiosity. I typically am always the same no matter what, unless I am dehydrated.

I, too, weigh myself daily — mostly out of habit. I only "record" the weight on Monday mornings. I just like stepping on it to see where I'm at and I don't let it control me.

You've got a really great attitude to the dreaded scales. I used to weigh myself every day and my day was dictated by those numbers. Now I weigh myself once a week and if it's in the right ballpark I'm happy.

I used to weigh myself every day, but when my scale battery died I just stopped. I now weigh myself about once a month and it hasn't affected my weight at all.

I can tell by the way I feel and the way my clothes fit whether my weight is 'good' or not.But I am a lifetime WW member and do go to weigh in once a month so I can keep my program materials and membership current.I weigh myself before I go to that meeting! That is the only time I ever weigh myself anymore. I guess I just want to know what to expect when I get there….

I do weigh most days, usually right b4 I hop in the shower (sans clothes). I do put too much "weight" on the number, but it is what it is, and I'm always a work in progress.I would love one day to have more peace of mind about my weight, but for now…it's taken backseat.

yes. I'll hop onto the scales every other day or so … Definitely at least 2x a week. I hate surprises – the kind you get when you hop onto the scales after say, 2 weeks, and it goes BAM! +20lbs? So I avoid that kind of surprises by getting on the scale regularly.

i appreciate this post because so many people are anti-scale. "the scale is so bad, puts negative thoughts in your mind" etc etc. it's not the scale that does that, it's advertising and society telling us we're fat… anyway, like you i also like to weigh in. i do get giddy though when i see a good number 🙂 it's just a reminder to keep making healthy decisions and to work for what i want (being fit, looking fit, etc).
