Or in the case of this weekend, a frisbee.
Friday night we got a call from the doctor’s office with the results of all of Jones’ tests. We weren’t surprised to hear that the long strep test was positive. Disappointed, as this likely means a tonsillectomy this summer, but not surprised. What caught us off guard though was that the food allergy test showed positive for nuts, sesame, and wheat. Huh? He’d been tested as a young child and was only positive for eggs (which he has since outgrown), so this is new and surprising. Interestingly, his recent stomach aches do seem to coincide with taking nuts for lunch at school and would also explain why he had fewer tummy aches on the weekends. We’ll find out more later this week when we consult with our regular pediatrician.
Saturday, our elderly cat went from not great shape to unable to walk across the room. When our very interventionist vet (seriously, they’ve offered everything from IV to acupuncture in the past) said that the only thing they could offer us was some pain meds so we could have a few days to say goodbye, we decided it was time. While it was a life lesson I wasn’t quite ready to teach my boys, I was glad that they were actually able to say goodbye. Losing a pet is always hard, but trying to deal with my grief as well as that of two little boys was one of the hardest things I’ve ever dealt with and I know it’ll be a while before we are all on an even keel again.
After I returned from the vet, we decided to take the boys walking on Roosevelt Island to take everyone’s minds off the past day. The weather was perfect and we saw a ton of turtles. The boys climbed some rocks and ran around and then played hide and seek near the statue in the middle. Beer Geek and I sat in the shade to wait, when suddenly I got hit in the mouth with an errant frisbee. Thankfully, the only damage was to the inside of my lips where my teeth cut them, which was a pretty bloody mess.
Life can go back to its boring normal any time soon. I’d really like to go for a run that didn’t involve crying. And I’m really over the puffy eyes and the lips that look like Tammy Faye on a bad day…
You poor thing! Hopefully whatever bad juju that was hanging around you has gone away now. My condolences to you and your family. I know how hard it is to lose a furry family member.
oh that is a rough run of luck, hope things turn around soon for you. Sorry to hear about your cat. Hugs to everyone
Oh, Mama, you have my sympathies! Losing a pet is one of the hardest frisbees life can throw at you. {hugs}
I'm sorry about the loss of your cat. I've had to deal with that a few times and it is always rough. The hardest for me when when my daughter took it especially hard. So I really feel for you. *hugs*
{{{Hugs}}} When we had to put Precious to sleep (2 years ago now), telling the girls was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do as a mom!
Sorry to hear about your cat. Gentle hugs to your boys. Our pets are certainly family members and it takes awhile to grieve for them.Dang – how unlucky to be hit by a Frisbee. Hoping you can enjoy the rest of the long weekend.
I'm so sorry. And it sucks about Jones, too. But at least you have a diagnosis and a course of action. Good luck. We are in the middle of moving with two small boys and I feel like I have been hit by a Frisbee.
So sorry about your cat :-(When we lost our two years ago, I totally lost it! It took me weeks to stop checking out the front door for him. It's hard!It was harder on me than the kids.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat. Pets really do become like family members and it's so hard to say goodbye.
So sorry to hear about your cat. Sounds like he was a big part of the family. Glad family members were able to say their good-byes. I'm sure the cat will be missed. *hug*
Oh yikes, not the best start to your weekend! I'm so sorry about your cat and the frisbee (WTF!) – ouch!!! Glad you weren't more badly hurt.
Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope you have a good weekend. Glad you found out what has been giving Jones the stomach aches.
So so sorry about your cat. We have 2 and we all just love them. So Sorry.
Sorry about your loss. 🙁 What a difficult time for you and then for your sweet kids too.
Lots of curveballs. Sorry about your cat. Losing a pet is very tough. How allergic is Shoe to nuts? Is your school good about peanut free areas? This has to be monitored really well. I had a peanut allergy last year (a student) and no students could bring nuts in anything for snacks. There were lots of things we had to do. The other parents were great but I think originally in earlier years there was lots of resistance to it being everyone's problem. Good luck with it.
oh my goodness, i am thinking of you! i am right there with you on the allergy front. my son is allergic to a gazillion things (including nuts and sesame). just when you think you have it all figured out, something springs on you. hang in there. and i am so sorry about your kitty. i know that must be so very hard. i have lost a pet but not since having children. our dog is almost 10 years old and is showing signs of getting old – falling down the stairs a lot and her hearing is going. it pains me to think about how we will handle it when the time comes (hopefully years from now, but still). oh, and the frisbee. seriously!! i mean, wtf?! you are a strong woman and you will get through all of this…all while inspiring the rest of us. hang in there!ps – i would love to run with you some time. i'm not sure where you are in the dc area but i don't think it's far (i'm in reston) and our paces are pretty close. let me know if you are up for it – i would love to come meet up with you for a run!
I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. Losing a pet is always really hard.
