This has been an interesting year for me so far. In some ways it was super planned (our trip to Australia and New Zealand) and some ways it’s been completely a “roll with the punches” year. I’m still dealing with the hail damaged rental car, my kitchen is still not started, and Monday I worked 4 different gigs. (I won’t be doing that again, see below for what I’m letting go.)
But the weirdest part of the whole summer is that I had no real running goals. Well, except to actually start running again, so I guess I nailed that. End of post. No?
Ok, here were my goals for the year with updates on where life is.
Running
- Continue running injury free. Ooh, I completely blew this one. I still can’t run too many days in a row without my foot getting pissed. I mean, I’m happy that I can run some and that I’m slowly building mileage for MCM, but I’m so over always feeling like I’m about to not be running again.
Fitness/Physical Health
- Continue following the Faster Way to Fat Loss program. (affiliate link) Quite frankly, this program has saved me. If I wasn’t putting a ton of energy into these workouts, I’d be completely a wreck with as little running as I’m doing. I’m not happy that I’m behind in marathon training and I miss racing, but I’m still in great shape and all my clothes fit. Win!
Work
- Blog when I have something to say. Umm, I have a lot less to say than I thought I would. Still trying to decide how I feel about that.
- Sub once a month at the local public library. I’m cutting this back to every 2-3 months. I want to sub just enough to keep my status, but I really don’t have time for it.
- Have fun with my new job with ZOOMA. I love this job. I do a lot more now than when I was hired and I have learned so much. I’m excited to be attending all three races this fall. My code ERIKA2018 will still get you 10% off of any race. I know a group of us will be at Great Lakes – you should join us!
Personal
- Take a huge trip with our boys. OMG, this was the most amazing trip. The flights were long, but the actual time there was just too cool. Even with two weeks, we only saw a portion of New Zealand and Australia, but we managed to do some really cool stuff. Beer Geek and I have already discussed going back for a month once the boys have left to spend time on the south island when it’s not winter.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’m a bit nervous about this fall. I’ll be working more hours a week than I have since my 16 year old was 3. Thankfully, most of the work is from my dining room and my boys are now old enough to help me out around the house. Luckily I am one of those people who thrives on being busy and becomes much more efficient when I have no time to not be efficient.
How did you do on your summer goals? Did you hit the items on your bucket list?

I think most of us are more efficient when we’re really busy. The trick is not to work yourself into the ground!
This is my “big” weekend. My longest race. I’m excited & nervous but right now I’m just busy getting all the animal stuff together, cleaning the house, & maybe packing eventually. 🙂 Racecations keep me too busy in prep mode to get nervous!
I’m really happy with the summer–especially after the past weekend when we went to Lake Wisconsin with both the boys. It’s been a long time since we’ve all gone up there together and it was one of the highlights of my summer. The big blogger meetup in Chicago was another one! I’m looking forward to Zooma. It’s going to be fun!
I once traveled to South Dakota with 4 other women to do a marathon. As we drove out of the airport, a massive hailstorm whipped up and damaged our rental car. The guy at the rental car place told us to contact our credit card company (the credit card we used to rent the car), and they paid for the whole thing. No deductible! No hassle! It’s one of the perks credit cards often issue that no one knows about because no one actually reads the fine print of their credit card agreement. Did you try contacting your credit card company?
Hey, sometimes we gt it all done and sometimes we don’t! It sounds like life and your job have kept you busy, so it’s understandable why you haven’t done everything you wanted to. Congrats on the gig with Zooma! That’s so cool you can work from your dining room table 🙂 Now that I have two young ones, I need a job like that – are they hiring? (only slightly joking) I also get more done when I’m busier — who knows why that is but it works for me!
I’d love to be injury free. My main goal was to get back to doing my prehab exercises, which went well before Alaska. I only did one strength day on the ship, and it felt great. I did get cardio done, and it felt good to not have pressure to get everything in.
It sounds like you had an amazing trip! I’ve wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand for so long, but it seems too far away, haha! It certainly sounds worth the flight, I’m glad you all had a great time!
I didn’t have running goals for the summer other than to get rid of this plantar fasciitis…hopefully, things will be turning around, but it’s taking longer than I anticipated…
Visiting New Zealand and Australia sounds like it was a great summer! I have yet to visit those place, some day!
In the past, my summer goals have revolved around weight loss. I’ve been working through some disordered eating issues, so that was off the table. I thought about setting some other goals, but I ended up deciding not to set any goals this summer. I’ve always strived towards a goal, and it’s helped me achieve a lot. But I landed my dream job in May (to start in September), and that job search took a lot out of me, so I figured I could use a break!
I didn’t have a big list or any goals. I squeezed in runs amid a busy work schedule. I went on our boat most Sundays with the hibby. Spend one weekend in CT and one in NYC. Both with friends. And that’s the highlights.
It’s all about priorities, right? Running goals weren’t on my summer bucket list either. It’s all good. When my husband was away at college the in-laws packed up his two younger siblings and took a 5-month sabbatical in Australia and New Zealand. I’d love to swing that someday.
My goals this summer were simply to relax, read, and to take it easy. That is exactly what I did! Can’t believe summer break is over. I am excited about ZOOMA and look forward to meeting you.
It still sounds like you had a great summer! That trip sounds fabulous too!
