- Running Laur recently wrote an article about caring for your technical clothes. One of the things that she mentioned was not wearing your tech clothes more than once. The reason she cites is the sweat crystals damage the tech fibers. Hmm. I am guilty of re-wearing my clothes, especially shorts. I hang them to dry after I run and if it was a short run, I’ll likely wear them on my next short run. I do this only because I’m not a fan of doing laundry. Another tip she had was to wash a load of just tech clothes in special detergent. Since I have plenty of clothes (thank you to Pacers for all the technical shirts from races!), I am going to give this a try for a bit. We’ll see if I can make up a full load of running clothes. Of course, TMB is cringing because I can guarantee I’ll be clashing by the end of the week. That’s what happens when you rely on clearance shorts and race t shirts for your wardrobe.
- Speaking of TMB at Racing with Babes, she recently talked about base mileage and what kind of mileage you need to be doing each week to complete or compete at certain distances. Seems like my mileage has been a little light for marathon training. I’m ok with that, as I did even less mileage last time and completed the marathon. However, I have some goals at the mid-distance lengths once the marathon is over, so I’ll likely be trying to keep my mileage up so I can run strong at the 10 mile to half marathon distance. Based on my 5k pace, I should be able to break 1:30 for 10 miles and I should be a minute or two faster for the half. We won’t even discuss where I should be for the marathon, as I will be nowhere near that on race day.
- Which leads me to the discussion Beer Geek and I had about the upcoming marathon. To say I’m worried about it being hot is putting it a bit mildly. I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself to attempt a 4:30 marathon. Based on my 20 mile runs, I could theoretically pull it off. But, the chances of being miserable while trying that and crashing before the end of 26.2 are too high. I’ve decided to run conservatively and run to finish strong. If that time is better than last time, great. If not, so what? I’ve trained hard. I’ve given my all. I’m going to be proud of my accomplishments no matter what happens on race day.
- Totally unrelated, I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately from IRL friends about when I’m going back to work full-time. My answer to that is “possibly never”. One of my friends went so far as to say that she thought that within three months of Shoo starting Kindergarten, I’d be desperately searching for a job. Why is it that people assume that if I’m not planning to work a 40 hour week during specific hours controlled by someone else that I must be planning to sit on my butt and eat bonbons? I run, I write, I volunteer, not to mention all the things I do that fall under the heading “wife and mom”. Sure, none of these currently bring in any money, but I have hope of creating some sort of fulfilling “work” out of my endeavors. Will I ever be rich? No. Will I contribute to our family’s financial bottom line? Maybe. Will I be a sane mom, a happy wife, and someone who loves their life? Absolutely. And that, my friends, is priceless.
- We are two weeks from my second marathon and my two year blog anniversary. To celebrate those events and to thank all of you who’ve been along for the ride, I’ll be holding the “Beer is Good” giveaway shortly after the marathon. Thirteen prizes, thirteen winners. I’m still working out the details, but one thing is definite. If you are a follower by 9:30 on Monday night (May 3rd), you get an extra entry into the giveaway. I will not be asking people to advertise this giveaway or become fans of products or anything like that. Anyone can enter, but this giveaway is all about thanking those of you who’ve supported me on this journey. More details and a preview of items in upcoming weeks.
- It is super hot here right now. I ran 4.5 miles yesterday (back to adding parts of miles so I hit 100 for May) and it was supposed to be an easy run. The pace was slow (9:56 average), but it was hot and I ran in the shade, which in my neighborhood means lots of hills. Easy is not a word I’d use to describe it. Today it’s already 82, going up to 91 and I can’t run until this afternoon. I think “short and slow” is going to be the plan.
I 100% agree that not working 40 hours of paid labor a week does not equal bonbons and soap operas all day!!Great job on your runs…that is some crazy heat!

I like your giveaway rules! Simple!!! Stick to your guns for what works for you as a mom/wife etc.!! I am not good about washing my clothes separately except from my husbands!! I may have to try that! I don't rewear because I am afraid they will never stop stinking!! I ran in 80 degree weather today and I am so not used to it! Oh well.

I am not a Mom (my choice) but I am self-employed so I can relate. I will never be rich but the flexibility that being self-employed allows is priceless. Never worry with what others think you should be doing. Not as much now, because most people know my view, but in the past, people would always ask when we would have children. (never I hope) I do not worry with what society thinks I should be doing. It's my life and I am living it as planned.

I went away for the weekend and someone cranked up the heat!!! What's that about?Good luck with your hot run today… I must say, I'm a bit jealous. I'll be sitting on my butt in the gym pedaling away….

2 weeks now! I do tend to re-wear my running clothes a bit, mainly shorts and shirts when they don't get too sweaty on the previous run. I figure it takes a good amount of sweat for those 'sweat crystals' to really form, and an easy run is fine. 🙂 (and thanks for the linking!)I'm with you on the 'may not go back to work' thing. It's not like you're frittering your life away – you're just not a slave to a time clock, and there's a lot to be said for that.

love it. when we had Berry Boy I was sure I would freak out and be back to work the second my mat leave was over, but I took 3yrs off instead 🙂 Even now, with both the boys, I work barely part time, and that mostly from home. I'm blessed to be able to be here.

don't ya just love how everyone wants these definitive answers on your future? Stay cool in that heat–I could feel the humidity mounting here today but nothing like that–ugh!

AHHH! CLASHING OUTFITS!! OK, seriously, I think that you should trust your gut on the marathon. I think you could do a 4:30 and maybe that day you will, but don't stress over it. If it happens it happens, if not, there's always another race.Job situation – I hope you can find something that works for you. That's a big part of why I got certified to coach. We have been fortunate enough that I don't have to work. Nor do I think I ever really want to. But I love having something small and flexible to do that is so in line with my passions. I think you mentioned it before, but we need to come up with some joint venture …Giveaway – CAN.NOT.WAIT.And it is crazy hot here too. Obviously. We don't live that far from each other.

It isn't super hot here yet, but I did say a little prayer to Mother Nature today after my long run, desperately asking her to let up on the wind on half marathon day in two weeks.I'll ask her for some cooler temps for you too the next time I say that prayer.

I wash my clothes separately only because I smell so bad! But I am guilty of not washing some shorts in between every run. It's just too tough!Nice job on getting the hot running done. I hope it cools some for our marathon days!

I think you've got your work/life balance pretty much sorted. When you have kids it's really hard to put 100% into both and we all know which is more important.

Totally agree on the not working 40 hours for someone else, stuff! Phooey on them all!Ugh on those temps! Hang in there! You are going to rock the marathon!

Lol, I re-wear tecnical clothes, too. I always try to remember to apologize to my running buddies in case I stink! Totally agree about the mom thing, it is the most important job in the world (not to mention the hardest!) Wow! 91 degrees! We won't see that until July, I ran with my winter hat and mittens on Saturday : )

I agree with many of the comments that you have already received. Don't go back to work if you don't want to. As long as you and your family are happy that is what is important. I wish that I didn't have to work as many days:) My college son's tuition keeps me working more than I care to.Wow, that marathon is coming up quickly! You will do great:)Let me know what days you will be in WI and maybe I could drive over to meet you. Do you know if that Madison Mini is already filled? If it is just a half marathon I may consider running it:) Let me know. Happy Monday!

Would love to meet you in Huntsville. Keep me posted of any races in MS, LA, AL, I may be able to coordinate.

Your marathon goal sounds good. And, who knows, you may surprise yourself :-)On the sahm/work thing — I hear ya! I get questioned about that and it drives me nuts.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog! I love your point about work. I work 40+ hours a week, but because it's from home, I have friends who think I don't have a "REAL" job. Whatever that means! What's this about beer, and a giveaway?

I have to read that article. I always re-wear my clothes. I may have to change my ways! (I am also a member of the "not-a-laundry-fan" club plus I refuse to run a small load!Mileage. I love TMB's post about mileage. Great points. I am usually a little high but that's what I like. I think some range between high and low miles still gets good results and can work better for the individual runner.I think if you are able to stay more family focused (and less working "for" others) you should! Do what's best for you and the fam!

I like having two runners in the house, it means that we almost always have enough tech clothes to make a full load for the washer. The tech wash is pricey, but without it my hubby's clothes would smell to high heaven.Great job running in heat, I think I like running in cold better (easier to take off layers)
