How is it Monday already? I’m pretty sure someone stole some of my hours this weekend. Today I’m linking up with Tara with my weekend update and Rachel and Janice with my plans for the week.
My parents got here on Thursday afternoon, so I had a running partner for my Friday run. And running with my dad is not a walk in the park.
I can’t remember the last time I managed a sub-10 average pace for 6 miles (and mile 6 was 9:04). Yes, I was afraid I was going to puke. But somehow, I can always run faster with my dad than with anyone else or by myself.
Of course, we had to go to Mad Fox to eat back the calories we burned (and then some.) While there, we ran into our friend (and the owner), Bill Madden, who made sure to tell me about drinking Alaskan Smoked Porter on tap while he was judging at the Great Alaskan Beer and Barley Wine Festival. Sheesh, way to rub it in! So jealous.
Saturday started early with an indoor soccer game for Shoo, followed by some quick shopping for birthday gifts. Then we headed over to Shoo’s soccer clinic. My dad and I did 3 miles of speedwork and then walked three miles on the track while he played soccer. I was TIRED by the end.
But, hey, we had babysitters, so Beer Geek and I went out while Jones went to a birthday party. I had an amazing flight of beers, but the waiter seemed a bit shocked that I chose all dark and heavy and high alcohol. What can I say? I like my imperial stouts and barley wines!
Sunday was more of the usual: birthday parties, homework, hanging with my parents… My dad set up a soccer goal for Shoo. I bet the kid only comes in for meals now! I also did an easy 2 mile shakeout run to keep the streak alive and loosen up my tight hips. Not sure if it was my shoes or the track, but my hips were unhappy.
From a training standpoint, last week was a fall back week. My longest run was 6.2 miles with a total of 24 miles for the week. My running streak continues. 27 days so far!
My plan for this week:
Monday: 4 miles (probably on the treadmill as we are expecting freezing rain)
Tuesday: 3 miles
Wednesday: “rest day” AKA 1-2 easy miles
Thursday: 9 miles
Friday: 12 miles
Saturday: “rest day” AKA 1-2 miles
Sunday: 3-4 easy miles
It’s going to be a crazy week. Jones has orchestra rehearsal for 2-3 hours every night except Tuesday and a concert on Saturday afternoon. Shoo has his Saturday afternoon soccer clinic and then a soccer game at 8am on Sunday. Yes, I am tired already (and all I have to do is the driving. LOL)
Guess I’d better figure out what we are eating this week to make it through. Thankfully Beer Geek is fine with leftovers and we have a few meals in the freezer. Add a couple of crockpot soups and we are good.
Monday: Vegetable beef soup
Tuesday: Vegetarian Tortilla soup (but I’ll probably add chicken)
Wednesday: Leftover beef soup
Thursday: Leftover tortilla soup
Friday: Leftovers from the freezer
Saturday: out
Sunday: Chicken marsala (I’ll share the recipe I use next week)
How’s your week looking? I’ve been dreading this week since Jones got into Honors Orchestra. Does that make me a bad mom?
Join us tomorrow for Tuesdays on the Run! We’ll be talking about our worst races and what we learned from them. I’ve had some bad races, but I’m a bit undecided about which was my worst race ever…
Hopefully my upcoming week will be better than my last. I was so sick! I think your dad is pretty awesome
Yes, he is! Actually both of my parents are. I’m incredibly lucky.
it SO DOES NOT make you a bad mom.
unless Im one too.
NAH
never 🙂
we rock.
Thanks!
Awesome! Great run, great weekend! Looks like you had fun, and YAY for your run being under 10 minute pace; I know how it feels when things finally seem to be clicking! Don’t ever think you are a bad mom, nowhere close 🙂 You are still going!
Thanks! It was amazing to actually hold that pace for 6 miles after so many 11 minute miles lately.
I know you really enjoy running with your dad hope you all have a nice time together. It is a soup kind of week for sure! Happy Monday
It’s always nice to run with my dad, but man does he push me to go fast LOL.
Looks like you had a fun weekend! This is the time of year when those dark beers are so appealing!
Best news of all…my husband has started brewing beer again! He used to be a homebrewer before we had kids, even competed and did well, but stopped about 10 years ago. I’m so glad he’s going back to it.
Beer Geek used to brew before kids as well. Maybe we’ll do it again some day… But until then, where do you live? I need to visit. ;o)
Soups are great for leftovers. I make full recipes, then freeze the leftovers so I can pull out a tupperware and thaw it out for an easy dinner.
Yep, love soup leftovers.
Wow – great week of running – so impressed with your streak!!!
I don’t think dreading this week makes you bad at all – I have events that I feel the same way about sometimes just because of the scheduling nightmare:)
Yeah, I’m happy he got chosen, just not a fan of every night practices that are just far enough away that it’s not really worth driving back home. Ugh.
Wow that’s an intense schedule with orchestra! Hope the concert goes well! Awesome job running this past week.
Yeah, for some reason, for 7th/8th grade honors they cram it all into one week instead of a practice a week for six weeks like they did for 5th/6th grade.
I love that you are active with your family! That is awesome!
I’ve been running off and on with my dad since I was 12. He’s still faster than I am.
It’s awesome you got to run with your Dad! He is definitely a great motivator. I can remember when my kids were little…there would be something on the schedule every night. It was exhausting but they are only young for a short while. 🙂 I am very impressed with your streak!
Thanks. Luckily, J will be done with the honors orchestra and will just have school and the private orchestra he plays in before S starts back to major soccer playing. I don’t know how I’d do it if they both were in the height of their “season” at the same time.
I think it’s so cool that you went on a run with your dad; wow! Sounds like you had a really solid training week and I love your plan for leftovers; they save me during the week! Thank you so much for linking up with the blog today; I hope your week is off to a great start!
So far so good on the training. We’ll see how I feel about it in a month or so LOL.
My week last week was insane, we were out with a kid activity almost every night…thankfully this week is a quiet one 🙂
This is an unusual week for us. Usually we only have 1 orchestra rehearsal, 1 cello lesson and 2 soccer practices (for S) each week. That’s a bit more manageable.
Gotta love it when the kids pick up instruments and now it commits you to more stuff. LOL!!! The vegetable soup sounds divine – I think I am gonna make soup today too. You have some good mileage planned this week too.
I know. It’s so good for him (and he’s quite good), but exhausting to juggle.
lots of soup in your house this week – it’s PERFECT weather for it!
Yes, this cold damp weather just cries out for soup.
That is so awesome that you can run with your dad and that he actually gives YOU a run for your money! Love it! Wish my parents would run!
9 and then 12 miles reminds me of when my husband was marathon training. I remember asking him if Sunday (his rest day after) was hard because he wasn’t running. His reply? “No. I’m tired!”
Have a great week!

How awesome that you can run with your dad! I LOVE that.
I’m in awe of your dad. How COOL you can run with him and do speedwork no less!
So great that you got to run with your dad. And speedwork too! And so great that your streak is still going strong!
Aw, I love running with my dad! Glad you got to spend some time with your’s! I’ve been meaning to try Mad Fox for a while! 🙂
How awesome that your Dad loves to run as much as you. It is also cool that he likes to challenge you 🙂
A very friendly vendor at a beer festival this summer in Maine introduced me to Barley wine. Whew. Let’s just say I learned about the high alcohol content of barley wine REALLY quickly, lol! Great job on your fast 6 miles!!!
I love that you and your dad run together. I think that is just so awesome. My dream is that my kids will want to run with me when they’re older. I should get working on speed so I can keep up with them 🙂
ALL THE BEER!!!
So fun that you have an active family. Love that you got runs in with your dad. I know what you mean about the crazy schedules. I feel like I’m looking at my calendar multiple times a day for fear I’m going to forget something or someone!!
Ha, I spent all day yesterday reminding myself that I needed to pick my son up early for the dentist.
