2018 is here and I still feel like much of my life is in flux. While I am not a Type A personality, I do like to have my life somewhat planned and be in control of the things around me. That doesn’t seem to be how life is going to work for now, so my big scary goal relates to that.
My big scary goal for the year:
Take each day as it comes. Roll with the punches and keep on moving forward with a smile on my face.
I do, of course, have a loose framework for our year, but I usually like to set SMART goals and I’m going for a much more relaxed plan this year.
Running
- Continue running injury free. That’s it. I’m sure I’ll run a few half marathons and I still plan to run MCM again this year, but I need to get back to the joy of running again. I may hit a new state or two. I may not. I may even race in a new country (see below), but that will just be a bonus rather than a goal.
Fitness/Physical Health
- Continue following the Faster Way to Fat Loss program. (affiliate link) I love this program. I like the variety – it’s keeping me interested and my body challenged. I just signed up for a second round to help me fully internalize what I’ve learned.
Work
- Blog when I have something to say. Seems like a no-brainer, right?
- Sub once a month at the local public library. It’s a fun gig and I enjoy keeping my skills up, so I’ll try to grab a shift when they come available.
- Have fun with my new job with ZOOMA. I’ve been working with the Director of Events, providing assistance with the ZOOMA Texas race and the online challenges. My “duties” are pretty varied but a ton of fun. As the other races come closer, I’ll be more involved with those as well. There’s a good chance that if you run one of the races, you’ll see me there. (And as a reminder, HAPPYHOLIDAYS will get you 15% off the Texas race through 1/2/2018. My code ERIKA2017 will still get you 10% off of any race. Also, ambassador applications are still open! Click here to apply! )
Personal
- Take a huge trip with our boys. We are planning to take the boys to Australia and New Zealand this year. Beer Geek and I went to Australia 20 years ago and I’ve always wanted to go back. We are in a sweet spot right now where the boys are old enough for major travel, but haven’t yet left for college, so we’ve decided that this is the time to do it. As you can imagine, this is impacting every other travel plan for the year. (Wonder if I’ll be able to convince the boys to go spelunking with me…)
I do plan to continue to simplify and organize my life. Very little “stuff” came into the house at Christmas this year and more “stuff” will continue to leave the house. I am a loyal user of my bullet journal now – although I need to change the format a bit for 2018. And I’m excited for my adventures as an ambassador for some amazing companies, including getting invited to be a part of Altra’s new Red Team.
2018 is looking to be an awesome year and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

That’s neat about Zooma and your trip. Love it!! Happy New Year!
Thanks! Happy New Year!
That trip sounds like it will be amazing! I am also type A and like to have everything planned out, but Ive tried to let go a bit especially with running. Congrats on being an Altra Ambassador!
I haven’t even gotten it on the calendar yet due to Beer Geek’s work. I’m doing my best to stay zen about it LOL.
For an “unplanned” year it sounds pretty amazing to me! I have *always* wanted to go to Australia & New Zealand.
Congrats on your new gigs! Happy adventures in 2018, Erika!
I can’t wait. It was so cool last time and it’ll be fun to take the kids.
Wow, I didn’t you were working with Zooma. Why Texas? 😉 I love your big family vacation plans. I’ve gotten to Australia for work and had a bit of time to explore but not much.
Texas is the first race of the year – I’m doing stuff for the other races, but Texas is my main focus right now.
The trip to Australia sounds wonderful – that’s a bucket list destination for me! Congrats on the Altra Red Team!
I’m really looking forward to it. And very excited about the Altra Red Team.
You’ve got some amazing plans for this year! How exciting about ZOOMA! Hopefully I’ll see you at the Lake Geneva event.
Happy New Year!
I’m hoping to be at that event. It’s so close to home for me!
awesome goals! I am in love with my bullet journal too 🙂
How exciting! You are totally in that travel sweet spot. We talking about going to Australia/New Zealand as a graduation trip for Thing 1, which would be the summer after next. All the best with your goals and everything else 2018 brings your way.
I think we may be doing this instead of a graduation trip LOL. 2018 should be interesting.
That’s awesome about Zooma and joining the Altra Red team – congrats!
Thanks!
That is a great “Big Scary” goal and definitely one that I can relate to. I’m really excited for 2018 to be a great year. That’s so cool that you work with ZOOMA and are an Altra Ambassador…I’ve never tried their shoes but hear great things. Happy New Year, Australia sounds amazing…I’m jealous!
I was pretty psyched to be picked by Altra again. I love their shoes and the company.
You had such a busy year in 2017, you are due for a less-busy year in 2018. I know…easier said than done, right? 😉
This year is busy in a different way, but that’s ok.
Congrats on your new job with ZOOMA! I am excited about the one in WI and actually applied to be an ambassador. I hope I get picked.
Australia and New Zealand sound amazing!!!
I’m definitely going to try to be at the ZOOMA in Wisconsin since it’s near home for me. Glad you applied!
I would love to go to Australia, but I’m not sure about the plane flights. That’s a super long way to go. I have friends who went this summer, and they loved it.
It’s not a fun flight. So long!
Rolling with the punches was exactly how I got through last year. Thankfully, I have this year planned out a little more. lol I’m not Type A either but I do like to have a plan! I hope your punches are less fierce than some of the ones I got last year. UGH. But, it’s all good. 🙂 That trip with your boys sounds amazing!!! They are so lucky and that’s so awesome that you are able to do that with them!
So far mine are just annoyances and scheduling issues. Fingers crossed for no real punches this year. Glad you are doing better this year.
How fun you are going to Australia! I would love to travel there one day. But I would not look forward to that flight!
The flight is definitely not the highlight of the trip…
I am already jealous of your Australia trip!!!! I went when I was 14 years old… and have wanted to go back ever since. I can’t wait to hear all about it!
I’m really looking forward to it. I loved it when we went a 20ish years ago.
Sounds like an exciting year ahead for you and your family! Happy New Year
Thanks! Happy New Year to you as well.
Congrats on the job with ZOOMA! It sounds like you have quite a bit to look forward to. The trip to Australia sounds incredible! Can I step away in your suitcase? 😉
Only if you want to deal with sleep deprived teens LOL.
sooooo hope I can see you this year!!!
It’s looking like I will be down there!
That is a big goal for someone who likes to plan! Australia sounds incredible. Have fun with Zooma and congrats on Altra!
Yeah, I’m already struggling with not being able to get dates on the calendar for things.
