I don’t run with music. I think I’ve run three times in my entire running career with my ipod. I trained for both marathons and lots of halves with only my own thoughts and very occasionally a companion to entertain me.
I think that may have to change. Two of the five halves are run on approximately 1 mile loops. Yes, I have to run the same loop nearly 13 times for two different halves. I’m going to need to work on some mental strength in addition to my endurance.
Yesterday I mapped a one mile loop from my house and ran it three times. I plan to run one time a week where all of the miles are on that loop. Yes, I do believe my neighbors will think I’m crazy when I run the loop 10-13 times. I figure the homeless guy I pass will think he’s hallucinating.
Anyways, doing the same loop three times was, umm, boring. So, it looks like I need to start running with music. Since the only recent songs I know are “Call Me Maybe”and that Gangnam Style song (and I only know those because of the awesome parodies), if I’m going to be running to anything other than a bizarre combination of ABBA, Fugazi, and Toad the Wet Sprocket, I’ll need some help.
Anyone got a half marathon play list? Or at least some “must run to” songs?
Save me from myself, please!
i generally don’t run with music either, but i love me some call me maybe ;o) check out this site… it might really help you out! have a super tuesday!! spa love!!! http://jog.fm/
I don’t really like loop courses, but not so much that I would listen to music. I would just try to spot something new on every loop.
FYI – I am in DC this week, but am going beer-free since it is the week before my marathon. Besides, you are so busy, when do you have time for a beer!
Ooh, I have lots of songs to suggest. Music can really motivate me during races (that is, when I race, I’ve been on hiatus from running due to a torn plantar fascia). You will not find any “Eye of the Tiger” or Rocky themes on my iPod – when I run is my time to indulge my secret, shameful love of teen pop and hip hop. iTunes thinks I am either a teenybopper or a rapper’s girlfriend. Some of my favorites:
Green Light – Beyonce
Resuscitate Me – September
Wild Ones – Sia/FloRida
Feel So Close – Calvin Harris
Stronger (A-Trak Remix) – Kanye West
Wake Up Call – Maroon 5
Don’t Stop the Music – Rihanna
Lights – Ellie Goulding
Somebody to Love (Remix) – Justin Bieber/Usher
Someday – Black Eyed Peas
If I Had You – Adam Lambert
Feedback – Janet Jackson
Gimme More (Paul Oakenfold Mix) – Britney Spears
Let it Rock – Kevin Rudolf
Higher – Taio Cruz
Loca (feat. Dizzee Rascal) – Shakira
Love Lockdown – Kanye West
I love Toad the Wet Sprocket. I personally prefer to run to Rock music (I find Pop to be annoying). Favorites lately have been:
Shinedown: Adrenaline
Linkin Park: The Catalyst
Jimmy Eat World: My Best Theory
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Factory of Faith
Rise Against: Satellite
Silversun Pickups: Panic Switch
Coldplay: Major Minus
Anything by David Guetta gets me moving! But I only listen to music when I have no company
I don’t run with music and don’t even own a music playing device. I love loop courses and have done multi 24 hour and 6 day races on 1km loops. My best is 689km in 6 days. That is 689 x 1km loop. I can’t see me doing that with music. I won’t concentrate enough on the important things. I’m doing a 48 hour race the end of the year on a 500m 0.5km loop. I don’t think I will be able to ever run with music.
oooh, I can’t run WITHOUT music. I’m going to love getting more suggestions here. I’d post my playlist but I think it’s about 700 songs, so that probably isn’t a good idea 🙂
I haven’t updated my playlist in ages but here’s the last time I posted my playlist:

Maybe you could try audio books instead? I listen to music purely as a distraction from the pain (LOL) since I’m still a fairly new runner but I’ve been thinking of switching to audio books as my distraction because my pace can be affected a lot by the tempo of the music (again, not that I’m terribly concerned with pace yet, but I’ve noticed how my pace is affected if a slower song comes on.)
A loop course for a half marathon?! Great googlymoogly! Once I hit double digits there must be music for at least part of the run. My playlist has a little bit of everything including FloRida, Jay Z, Eminem, Will Smith, Rhianna, Kanye West, Aerosmith, and Lenny Kravitz.
Another Mother Runner’s site also has some good playlists posted.
I run with music when I run by myself to save me from humming the same few bars of the last song I heard over and over and over till my run finishes. My playlist is bizarre and eclectic but because I don’t have to run to the beat of the music I just put on anything that I like. Pink is great to run to – she empowers me to be a stronger woman. And I’m partial to the Eurythmics. But I also have a smattering of Michael Buble, soundtrack of Glee and a bit of Queen.
stronger by kelly clarkson! Love it!
I hardly ever run with music, and I’m not sure there is any music in the world that would get me through two halves with 1 mile loops! But I do have my nano loaded with a running playlist that is quite ecclectic – classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, The Beatles), hard rock (Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax), current pop (Britney Spears, Kanye West, Eminem, Usher, Rhianna, Lady Gaga) and current rock (Linkin Park, Chris Cornell, Skillet) with a fair amount of ’80s dance thrown in for good measure. If not looking to have the music set your tempo, I would chose whatever music you really like. I find that most ’80s dance and a lot of today’s pop has a great beat that I can get lost in.
