Sometimes the excitement starts to wane. I mean we all get bored sometimes and start wondering if there’s something better out there. But we all want to keep things exciting and today on Tuesdays on the Run, I’m going to tell you how. Read and learn.
Cheat.
Well, let’s just start off with the big guns then. But seriously, if you are tired of running, do something else for a while. Take a class, join a gym, pull your old bike out of the garage. Nothing makes running more appealing than a little time away.
Buy a new toy or a special outfit.
I mean sometimes you gotta freshen things up. What better than something to make the activity a bit more fun – like a new Garmin. Or how about a new foam roller to liven things up? It’s a fine line between pleasure and pain, after all.
Ask someone to join you.
It’s always more fun with friends, right? So make time in your schedule to hit up your run club or meet a runner friend for a run. It doesn’t even have to be anyplace special – just adding a friend adds some excitement. Heck, add a few someones for even more fun.
Take a little trip.
Who hasn’t wanted to take running on a racecation? There are so many races and so many beautiful places to run. And if you’re lucky, you might even come home with a little jewelry, I mean, bling.
Add some variety into your time together.
Is long and slow your thing? Maybe throw in a little change in tempo. Hard and fast can be fun sometimes. But it quick is your thing, maybe try to spend more time together. A nice long double digit run goes a ways towards reconnecting.
Accept that sometimes it will be boring.
And that’s ok. Sometimes the best run is the comfortable run without a goal or an electronic leash. Sometimes it’s good to just enjoy what you have together without a PR or covering a specific distance. Sometimes it’s awesome just to be together.
You know this was all about running, right? How do you keep running exciting? What are your tips?
I’m currently going with spending time apart. My heel started acting up again before my long run on Saturday – and I ran anyways. I know. But I really really needed to get in a double digit run before life got too crazy. But now I’m not running at all for the next two weeks. Hopefully some rowing, biking, and elliptical will keep my cardio up while my foot calms down again.
Adding to the fun is not knowing what’s going to happen with Hurricane Florence and my impending trip to Wisconsin for ZOOMA Great Lakes. Yeah, I’m running off to work a race while my husband and kids deal with a hurricane. #momoftheyear.
Also, I wrote about the wrong topic. I’m gonna blame Florence.

I definitely think it helps to change things up by taking time away or doing different types of workouts. I hope your heel feels better!
For me, it’s about the racecation. It keeps me motivated, because there’s always the next one.
And the stress relief. It’s been a stressful summer!
Variety is the spice of life right? I’m all for focusing on something else when running and I aren’t getting along. Hope the time off helps your foot!
I love all of these tips and they are so true! Trying something new and bringing a friend along makes all the difference in the world!
Right now, I would give anything to hook up with running. I think HE left ME, not the other way around! I have been doing the elliptical, walking and swimming, but the magic just is not there. I want running back! 🙁
Have a great time in WI!
Haha thats ok i like this topic. I totally agree with new toys and kew running outfits! Also yes to new running routes and running buddies. And of course taking a break- good luck with his and hopefully you feel back soon!
