It seems like "busy" is the new status symbol. Everyone is constantly on the go and juggling so many things. The most common response to the question "How are you?" seems to be "busy", rather than an actual answer. So, how do you balance work, life, fitness, etc. in your busy life? Before I get to my thoughts on balancing things, I want to share some big news about Tuesdays on the Run with you. April has decided to take a break from blogging (details on her blog), so Patty and I have recruited a new co-host. Please welcome Marcia from Marcia's Healthy Slice! I've "known" Marcia for years. I love her blog and we have a lot in common (except she's way faster than me LOL), so I'm super excited to have her join us. I'm also a little … [Read more...]
TOTR: Running pet peeves
Pet peeves - those things that for whatever reason really annoy us, often disproportionately to the actual level of inconvenience it causes. We all have them, some of us more than others. When Patty, April and I chose "running pet peeves" as our Tuesdays on the Run topic, I thought to myself "I really only have one". But as I thought about it more, I found more and more things that annoy me. Thankfully, running mellows me out, so I tend to not get too bent out of shape about things. Dogs, especially those with invisible fences - my parents' neighborhood is full of these. I'll be running along and a dog will come flying at me. I never know if they are going to stop at their yard or attack me. One can only hope that the heart rate … [Read more...]
Five things I was doing a decade ago
Today's topic for Friday Five with Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia is "Five things I was doing a decade ago". Hmm, there are a lot of things I was doing a decade ago, but if I look back at 2005, I can think of 3 things I was doing and 2 things I wasn't... … [Read more...]
Living my priorities
One of my favorite blogs to read is MizFit. Invariably, her posts either make me smile or make me thing. A lot of times they do both. One of the messages she frequently comes back to is "living your priorities". Recently, she talked about how saying no to something is basically say "that's not a priority right now." Lately, I've been saying no a lot. It's fall. It's my normal "holy hell, I'm overwhelmed" time of the year. Soccer, getting back in the swing of things after summer, two kid birthdays, races, training, work, etc. always seem to add up to a hard September and October. I find myself tired and cranky. And I say no when I feel overwhelmed. This weekend, I began to attempt to say yes to those things that matter to … [Read more...]
It’s the little things
The big things in life can be amazing (a wedding, the birth of a child, hitting a goal you've been working hard for) and devastating (death, job loss, etc.) But it's the little things, both good and bad, that seem to affect me the most and I doubt I'm alone. In general, my life is pretty mundane. But I've been having a hard week or so. Nothing major, but in some ways it feels like being stoned to death by pebbles or bleeding to death from a paper cut. I'm in the process of selling our 1995 Jeep Cherokee. As much as I hate the car buying process, I hate the car selling process more. I took my Civic in for an oil change and some recall work. Not only did they find a ton of things "wrong" with the car, they broke a piece on my … [Read more...]
18 is so close to 20
No, I did not run 18 miles this weekend. I think my total mileage all last week was 18. I'm not talking about running today. I'm talking about marriage. 18 years ago today, we said "I do." And the Pastor said "till death do you part" multiple times. Guess he really meant it. 18 years, two apartments, one house, three cars, two cats, three pregnancies, two kids, and one gecko later, we are still going strong. And I can't imagine my life any other way. And if you are looking for a more substantive post from me today, go on over to Love, Life, Surf where I'm talking about another love of my life: beer! … [Read more...]
It’s the people…
I run for myself. I race because the running community is amazing. The examples of goodness from runners, volunteers, first responders, residents of Boston, etc. that have come out of the Boston tragedy are amazing. I am thankful to count many of of these people as friends. … [Read more...]
The Joy of running + WIAW
Lately, all of my running has been done for one reason: to train for this crazy ass goal of five half marathons in five days. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about my goal and a lot of my runs have been enjoyable, but they all have a goal: to build my mileage high enough that I can run 65.5 miles in one week and not get hurt. Not very exciting, huh? I'm just plodding along for a really.long.time. every day. In fact, running has become the thing I schedule everything else around. When a run is going to take up more than an hour every day (and often more like 2.5-3 if you consider the getting dressed and ready, running, eating, showering time), it plays a major role in the daily planning. If I'm not running, I fill my day to the brim … [Read more...]
Playing hooky
My kids have 10 more days of school and many of those days are half days or include parent involvement. My to do list is about a mile long. The only thing I've accomplished so far today is get my camp physical to go to cub scout camp. (That right there is huge.) But, I'm setting aside my list. I'll pick it back up this evening and get done what I can and shuffle what I can't. I'll cram in a weight workout sometime this evening. Why? A good friend just called and asked me if I want to go play tourist in DC. Said friend is moving out of the area in 2 weeks. I don't see enough of her as it is and will be lucky if manage to see her every few years after this. So, I'm being spontaneous (not something I'm great at). I'm … [Read more...]
