How is it Friday already? Oh wait, maybe the fact that I had exactly 4 hours this week with both children at school explains why I feel like the week flew and why I'm so incredibly far behind. Our school system closed school for Thursday at 8pm on Wednesday night. This is virtually unheard of - they much prefer to wake me up with a text at stupid early. And I'll admit, I was a bit surprised - it was raining not snowing and it was above freezing. But close they did. So, let's talk about five of my favorite things since that's the topic chosen by Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia for this week's topic. (There are affiliate links below and some items I got for free, but every product here I'd willingly spend my own money on.) 1. Sleeping in. … [Read more...]
TOTR: Will run for beer
Yes, there is a reason my blog has that in its tagline: it's one of my favorite post race treats. And that's today's topic for Tuesdays on the Run with my buddies Patty and April: What is your favorite post race treat? … [Read more...]
Whip up a sweet dessert with Yoplait Greek 100 Whips!
Many thanks to Yoplait for sponsoring today’s story and encouraging me to try Yoplait Greek 100 Whips!! I love dessert! I have a HUGE sweet tooth, as I mentioned earlier this week. I'm also marathon training, so I'm hungry all.the.time. So, when I had the chance to try the Yoplait Greek 100 Whips!, I jumped on it. I already had a love for the Yoplait regular whipped yogurt, so getting that same texture but more protein sounded fabulous. … [Read more...]

TOTR: Fueling your run
Today for Tuesdays on the Run, Patty, April and I are being joined by Lisa from Running out of Wine! After you read, comment, and link up (yes, in that order LOL) jump on over to her blog and say hi. Today we are talking about nutrition. I wish I had some awesome insight to impart, but I struggle with nutrition, both in general and during a run, more than with anything else running related. I run most of my races with nothing more than nuun. If I do eat, I prefer foods like pretzels, animal crackers, cliff bars, fig newtons, apple sauce pouches etc. over things like Gu, but in a pinch, I'll eat Gu or gummy bears. Any other run specific fuel has unpleasant side effects. And when I'm not running? I so haven't figured it … [Read more...]
Five things about my childhood
TGIF! It's been quite a week. The boys were off for two days, I missed out on an 8 mile run because I took a 2 hour nap, and my parents are here visiting. Busy, busy. But it's Friday and that means a beer and some relaxing with the family. It also means Friday Five with Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia. Today's topic is "5 Things about me", which, after blogging for almost 7 years, I think I've shared pretty much everything I'm willing to share: here, here, and here ;o) So, I'm following Courtney and sharing 5 things about my childhood. 1. My dad was military, so we moved a lot growing up. I've lived in 9 states and visited all 50, most of them before I was out of high school. But I didn't fly for the first time until I was in high … [Read more...]
12 Easy weeknight meals + training plans
Selective amnesia is a scary thing. It's the reason that we are able to have more than one child. It's the reason we run more than one marathon. The euphoria we feel takes the edge off the memory of how hard or painful it was. I'd already forgotten how much time training takes. Never mind that last March I ran 200 miles and basically did nothing but run... This time I'm training differently. My body is capable of higher mileage than I ever thought possible as I discovered during my Mainly Marathon series' trainings. With my first marathon, my highest mileage week was 35 miles. With my second marathon, my highest mileage week was 40 miles. This past week, my mileage was 32 miles - 29 of those were part of my training plan miles. I … [Read more...]
SparkPeople.com 30-Day Realistic Resolution Challenge + Gorton’s Fish #sponsored
I've been struggling with my eating and with feeding my family since sometime in November. My work hours have increased, Jones is starting with a new orchestra, and Shoo needs to be kept busy on a daily basis so as not to destroy my house with a soccer ball. Add in the weather and my increase in mileage and I need some help to both feed everyone and keep myself on track. So, when Gorton's offered me the opportunity to try some of their baked and grilled fish and join in on the SparkPeople.com challenge, I jumped at the chance. We've bought their grilled fish in the past and enjoyed it, but I'd never tried the baked before. To help me get started, Gorton sent me a lovely package consisting of a cookbook, the Spark story, Spark's 28 … [Read more...]
WIAW: Hello Fresh Review and discount code
We have been in a major food rut here. I've pretty much been cooking the same things over and over again, despite the beautiful recipes I have pinned over on Pinterest. So, when Hello Fresh agreed to send me a box to review, I was happy to take the opportunity. [Tweet "Get 25% off to try out a week of yummy meals from @HelloFresh #healthychoices"] … [Read more...]
Respecting your food intolerances
I don't have food allergies. As a mom to a kid with an allergy to peanuts, hazelnuts, and almonds, I know the difference. "Food allergies are “IgE mediated.” This means that your immune system produces abnormally large amounts of an antibody called immunoglobulin E — IgE for short. IgE antibodies fight the “enemy” food allergens by releasing histamine and other chemicals, which trigger the symptoms of an allergic reaction. " Source Most people with food allergies must practice complete avoidance, usually carry an epipen and benadryl at all times, and have to be wary every time they eat something. Food intolerances are different. Generally speaking, with a food intolerance, your body does not have a global immune response. Instead, … [Read more...]
WIAW: Beer Dinner
This is always my favorite What I ate Wednesday to write. I need to do it more than once a year LOL. So, the weekend before I started the 21 day reset, I went out with a bang. We hosted our auction dinner that we had donated to S' school auction. Each year, we auction off a four course beer and food pairing dinner to the three highest bidding couples. I like to use mostly local beers and was able to keep it to Maryland, Virginia, and DC this year. It was a warm weekend, so I made some menu choices based on not wanting to heat up my kitchen (AKA I bought the cake and put the beef in a crockpot.) Course 1: Cheese and beer I almost always start with beer and cheese. I've found that pale ales and IPAs go best with … [Read more...]
Friday 5: Five foods I got to try this spring
People like to send me things to eat. I like food. It's pretty much a marriage made in heaven. So, I'm joining up with Cynthia, Courtney, and Mar for their Friday Five with 5 yummy things I was sent this spring to try. Surprisingly, I liked them all. 1. Ladera Granola I'll be honest, I only eat granola when someone gives me some or if it's part of a breakfast buffet. It's not that I don't like granola, it's that I like it too much. If I have it in the house, I snack on it until it's gone (usually in an alarmingly short amount of time). That said, if I were going to buy granola, I'd buy Ladera Granola. It's made in the USA, has all natural ingredients (whole grain oats, all natural California almonds, extra virgin olive … [Read more...]
