Recently, I was given the opportunity to do a juice cleanse in exchange for a review on my blog. I had heard of South Block Cafe many times (it's local to me) and had had the opportunity to try their juices after a Revolve spin class. When I read about Sue and Courtney's experiences, I decided it would be something interesting to try. So, why do a juice cleanse? Here's what South Block has to say: A Juice Cleanse is a completely safe and natural way to give your body the necessary nutrients while at the same time giving your digestive system a much needed break. It's meant to be a lower calorie, natural way to provide your body with lots of vitamins and minerals, while leading you to healthier eating habits. It's not intended … [Read more...]
Subway #pileontheveggies, Maleficent and a Giveaway
I've never made a secret of my love for Subway as a recovery food. I had a Subway sandwich after every single race the first time I ran 5 half marathons in 5 days. I loved that I could put a ton of veggies on my sandwich. In fact, that's the main reason I like Subway: the sheer number of veggie options. My kids seem to have inherited my love for Subway as well (or perhaps it's that they've seen me eat it so often...) We don't go to movies often during the school year, but in the summer, hitting the movie theater on a hot day is just the thing. Use someone else's air conditioning while being entertained? Yes please! So, I convinced the boys to go with me to see Maleficent. They weren't exactly excited after hearing it was … [Read more...]
What I ate at the Fit Foodie Weekend
As a Fit Foodie ambassador, I had the pleasure of attending the Friday night VIP Cocktail Party, the post race finisher's festival and the brunch after the Boot Camp on Sunday (Boot camp will be it's own post). I could really make this a really short post. The food was AMAZING. The end. No? Ok, here goes. or What I Ate at Fit Foodie Friday Night VIP Cocktail Party The event was held in the "Interlude" under the Angelika Theatre. There was a drink table with cocktail options, wine, and beer. I partook of the cocktail innocently called "The Juice". It was quite tasty and refreshing, which was a little bit dangerous. In addition to the drinks, there were four food stations + a huge table of Sartori cheese. (One of the … [Read more...]
Wine’d Down Wednesday
Life is a little crazy here. Temps in the high 90s, school picnics (outdoors!), spending all of my free time trying to get my car fixed... I did manage to run on Monday and lift weights on Tuesday. Now I just need to figure out what I can cram in today! All I know is I'm in desperate need of a glass of wine (or a really good beer), so I partnered up with the ladies of Wine'd Down Wednesday for a little something different here today. I hope you all find it fun! Welcome to the 40th Week of Wine'd Down Wednesday!! 40?? Whaaat?? Thank you SO MUCH to everyone that has been linking with us so far, we are beyond thrilled to have you coming back week after week and just love reading all of your posts! We were all so excited and overjoyed that … [Read more...]
Come eat, umm I mean, run with me at the Fit Foodie 5k!
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on my trip to Venus. I only have three more half marathons to go and they will all be done by the end of May. And you know I can't stand being without a goal. MCM Mama without something on the horizon results in things like babies and home renovations and marathons. I can guarantee you that Beer Geek is not on board for ANY of those LOL. Thankfully, I was saved from myself... I was asked to be an Ambassador for the Fit Foodie 5K Race Weekend! Incentive to do speedwork? Yes, please. (I can't remember the last time I raced a 5k...) Yummy food the night before, the day of, and the day after? I'm in. (Please ignore my previous post about eating healthy LOL). A boot camp that will likely … [Read more...]
Metabolic Effect Diet and WIAW
I'm not really one to talk about dieting. I've been within a 10 pound range of weight since I lost the baby weight with Shoo. But I'm feeling soft and even my running skirts aren't fitting as well as they should, so I need to make some changes. I know Kim has had a ton of success with the Metabolic Effect, so I'm checking it out. I've skimmed it enough to start, but I really need to do a more in depth read. It's not earth shattering ideas, but most of what it suggests are things that have worked for me in the past: 1) More frequent meals, 2) Protein at every meal, and 3) decreased amount of starchy carbs. I do like that it doesn't tell you to eliminate entire food groups or even entire foods. It just suggests limiting how many bites … [Read more...]
Confessions of an Evening Snacker
I admit it: I'm a snacker. I always have been. Regardless of how much exercise I'm doing or what my weight is, I feel better when I'm eating every few hours. I've tried to stop it in the past, but it seems there is not enough protein and healthy fat in the world for me to make it more than 4 hours without eating. Longer than that and I become crabby and unreasonable. (There are lots of stories amongst our friends about times I've lost my sh%^ because I was hungry. 10+ years later I still get teased about a night in college where I nearly came to blows with a friend over where we were going to dinner.) So, I'm not trying to get rid of small, frequent meals. What I'm talking about here is the constant *need* to eat that I get in the … [Read more...]
Rungry and Hangry
I admit, I'm not one of those runners who increases their mileage and can eat anything they want. Instead, as soon as I begin to approach 40 miles a week, my body becomes super efficient at using every calorie that comes it's way. I gained weight when I trained for my first marathon. Did it again when I trained for my second marathon. And, yep, put on a few pounds last spring when I trained for five half marathons in five days. I've tried eating more (just put weight on faster), eating less (umm, hangry comes to mind), reducing carbs (hello, exhaustion), increasing carbs... Suffice it to say, I've messed around with my eating to try to fuel my runs without outgrowing my jeans. (Because, honestly, it's not the number on the scale that … [Read more...]
Walking and WIAW
My kids had the day off yesterday. It was called a teacher workday (and it is the end of the first quarter), but it intentionally coincided with election day since many of the schools are polling places. Luckily, both kids got invited to do activities with friends, so it was a win/win day - we all slept in AND my kids were busy. In addition to voting, I had a bunch of errands to run. I admit, I generally drive when I need to run errands. But yesterday, I needed some exercise since I hadn't walked the kids to and from school, I knew I had some time before the kids came home, and I was able to map my errands in a relatively efficient manner. So, I voted, went to the grocery store, went to the library, went to Starbucks (my treat for … [Read more...]
Mobile Gecko, Man Cold, and WIAW
Hmm, 3 things Wednesday? It's that time of year again - "Keep the gecko warm" season. You don't have that at your house??? One of the downsides of having an older house is the lack of insulation. When you put your hand against the wall in the winter, it's COLD! (And my closet is cold enough to keep beer cold...) After the fire, Jones decided he didn't want the gecko in his room. So, I've had a gecko in my living room for the past couple of months. Unfortunately, the living room location is in a corner with two outer walls, which means COLD gecko! So, now I have a gecko in my dining room... Wonder where he'll end up next? I have a cold. It's really pretty minor. A little scratchy throat and a stuffy nose. But I'm acting … [Read more...]
Step AWAY from the chocolate
Do you have a trigger food? Or something you always crave when you are stressed (or hormonal)? Mine is chocolate. No surprise there - most women would say the same. Yesterday, I lost track of how much chocolate I ate. And it wasn't even *good* chocolate - just chocolate chips and Annie's chocolate bunnies. But the combination of stress while waiting for Congress to get its head out of its butt + my monthly peak in hormones (why, yes, I do have one day each month where the cravings are nearly unstoppable), meant I spent most of the day searching for anything chocolate to put in my mouth. While this month was worse than some thanks to external stress, this is a monthly occurrence. So, I've come up with some strategies to … [Read more...]
Breakin’ my little green heart + a giveaway
I'm kind of a crunchy, granola chic. I do my best to follow the philosophy of "reduce, reuse, recycle". We follow "green" practices for our yard. I'm kind of uptight about short showers, turning off electronics, and walking when we can. Heck, I even work for a company whose mission is to help organizations promote environmental causes, especially clean water and water conservation. And I've always been proud of the fact that my children (and Beer Geek) have always packed lunches in reusable containers. (Yes, my husband carries a cloth lunch bag with his sandwich, apple, and snack in cloth sandwich bags.) This is what typical lunches look like in our house: thermos of milk, sandwich, fruit in a plastic BPA-free container, and … [Read more...]
